NOTE: All of our premium Arabica coffees are roasted to City+ to Full City roasts, showing minimal-to-no surface oils….we want all of the flavor to stay in the beans until the coffee is ground! Despite the additional descriptors, the first flavor and aroma you'll think of is "COFFEE".

Nicaragua Finca ENA

Nicaragua Finca ENA

About two years ago I was introduced to a lovely Danish-born coffee farmer named Frederik Zeuthen and his Nicaraguan export operation Cafenor. He was at final stages of “work in progress” in the Dipilto, Nueva Segovia region, home to many of Nicaragua's best coffees. His cupping scores had been incrementally increasing and thought that they'd have a terrific offering soon. Well, that time is now and Frederik sent a container of this super-fine Finca Ena to the West Coast. It's a dynamite Caturra/Red and Yellow Catuai mix. The jefe of Ena, Oscar Ortez(and family), grows on sub-lots ranging from 1000-1800 meters. There's an abundance of pine trees in the terreno, which probably contributes to the lively acidity and prominent palette of aromatics. Oscar also notes that he patio dries with a little more than normal amount of pulp and allows for a longer rest period than other farms in the area, which results in a cup with unusual (for washed Nicaraguans) notes of blueberry and stone fruit and a syrupy sweetness.
Historically, the men of the Ortez family were freedom fighters in the turbulent 1980s and many, including Oscar, were granted asylum in the US, where they toiled for 10-15 years before stability returned to the State and they were able to repatriate and run their prized farm. We salute their efforts! This is one of the best Centrals we've come across in years. The light-medium roast best experienced in pourover.

"I am one of the lucky winners of 4 lbs. of coffee from the Portland Taiko benefit banquet. The coffee is so good that the first batch is gone and I am ready for more."
