We're very excited to get this microlot of Kenya's finest, winner of esteemed Good Food Awards in 2015 and 2016!! Kiambu County is seated in Central Province, about 50 miles from Nairobi. Central Province is primo coffee-growing country and the seat of some of the most important Districts…familiar to fans of Kenyan coffee…Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Thika, Murang'a, Maragua, and Nayandarua. The area is used to experiencing constant showers, hence the kikuyu phrase ‘kia mbuu'' meaning the “place of drizzles.”
Grower Matthew Mugo's Abundancia farm Riamute-Kiambu AA is grown around 1800 meters under a banana tree canopy and from plantings which began in the early 1960s.The microlot is produced on close to 12 acres. Particularly noteworthy of this lot is the predominance of the SL34 varietal, close to 96%, the rest being SL28. These two—34 and 28-- are the strains identified and developed in the early third of the 20th century by (S)cott (L)abs, found in the best Kenyan All of the farm's production is exported solely to the US and Japan.
The flavor profile is are complex and fruit-forward, as SL34's tend to be (whereas SL28s are more prized for their pronounced acidity). Q-graded cup notes of cranberry, dark chocolate, zesty, jammy., Round mouthfeel. Best in pourover and drip preparation.
