The small island Flores sits at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago between Timor and Sambawa. Named by Portuguese sailors after the underwater gardens on the island's eastern end, Flores has a distinctly "Portuguese-tinge" to it within the languages and cultures of its indigenous peoples. This coffee is sourced from family owned farms located on the slopes of the Inerie volcano in the Ngada regency of Flores, one of the big islands in the Lesser Sunda archipelago of Indonesia.
The Wongawali farmer group has pooled resources to improve upon processing coffee using wet-hulling techniques (called “Ngura” in the Bajawan language), a uniquely Indonesian processing method in which the coffee parchment is removed before the final drying is completed, giving the coffee its hallmark Indonesian flavor. We have been big fans of the fragrant, big-bodies coffees like Ngura Bajawa (and counterpart Bajawa Ngura) for many years and will be incorporating this excellent coffee in our Mondocello espresso. But it stands well as a single origin espresso on its own in a medium-dark roast.
It also presents well in Chemex and other drip formats, evincing notes of butterscotch, chocolate, walnut and molasses. Great body, typical of fine wet-hulled Flores coffees. Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified.
