Java Mountain Pangalengen Womens' Cooperative washed

TIP: You can save products to your favorites list if you log in In what may be considered (and long overdue) “the year of the WOMAN”, 2016 saw the establishment of an unusual agricultural movement in West Java. With the formation of the Java Mountain Womens' Coffee Cooperative…an association of just 50 women growers cultivating traditional varietals in the areas surrounding Pangalengan and Ciwidey…a new era of empowerment was launched. Importer Royal Coffee marshalled this pilot project on the strength of the womens' commitment to sustainable practices and excellent samples provided at harvest. Part and parcel of this commitment will be using earnings from the sales of this coffee you're drinking (indirectly…the farmers have already been paid handsomely for the green coffee) to achieve future Organic certifications and fund local social programs. Another portion of earnings will be used to develop a sustainable nursery program to provide members with seedlings.
This is a fully washed (after depulping and fermenting, then sun-drying) coffee of local varietals grown between 1300-1650 meters above sea level. We settled on a medium roast (pre-second crack) to bring out the black cherry/sweet pipe tobacco/vanilla/chocolate mousse notes rather than a post-second crack profile of muted fruit and mostly chocolate. Excellent drip and powerful espresso despite the relatively small-for-the-region screen size and below-average moisture content of the green coffee.Arguably the best Java we've ever had at Badbeard's over the past ten years…and there have been many!
