Guatemalan producers are definitely on the rebound following the devastating epoch of the Roya fungus, a crop-killer which laid waste to most of Central American farms only a few years ago. The Huehuetenango region is one of the resurgent bright spots, and we expect things will soon get back to “normal” times when Guatemala's coffee crop was one of the world's finest and most prolific.
Finca La Maravilla is a modest farm of some 30 hectares started back in the late 1990's by Guillermo Rosales (who passed away some years ago) and his son, Mauricio, in a nearly-inaccessible mountainous area of La Libertad, Huehuetenango. They worked relentlessly to build their finca, ranging from 1600-1800 meters, into a world-class production facility, and today sector their farm into microlots to highlight the terrain and varietal distinctions. Our microlot is from a small plot where they grow (and blend) Bourbon, Pache and Caturra. This coffee is well-balanced and deep, echoing chocolate, raisin and caramel notes and medium acidity. Favored here as a pourover.
