Guatemala and much of Central America suffered greatly the last two years from the nasty Roya fungus which wiped out a good deal of production. Fortunately the Finca Medina, a sustainable farm located in the Department of Sacatepéquez outside of Antigua Guatemala. Founded and family-run since 1872, it encompasses 185 shaded hectacres in a canopy of grevillea and chalum trees. The fully-washed and patio-dried cherry is Bourbon and Caturra varietals are grown at an average altitude of 1550 meters above sea level. This is a rich coffee, very chocolately with some notes of dried cherries, peanut brittle and tamarind, and very much what the trade calls “classic Antigua”.
Despite being a fairly large coffee farm, Finca Medina's sustainable practices and social outreach to its 17 full-time and 174 seasonal harvest workers has garnered it certification by the Rainforest Alliance®. Its governance includes providingscholarships and funds to purchase school supplies, which extends to college enrollment for their employees and their children. Win-win!
