Par for the cautious course, and a wise decision, Baker's Dozen creator and master-organizer Brian Yaeger is following the guidelines from Gov. Brown and the Oregon Health authority and postponing the March 22 event. This means that there's a lot of great coffee beer ready to be slung...consult the list of brewer/roaster collaborators and check them out!

We'll be participating for the 5th year in the annual Baker's Dozen Coffee Beers/Beers/Donuts event in Portland, Sunday, March 22, from 10 AM-2 PM...White Owl Social Club...1305 SE 8th Ave. Creator and organizer Brian Yaeger pairs 13 different collaborating coffee roasters and breweries and invites all the local donut makers to offer their sugary deliciousnesses. Always fun, and some intriguing results. This year Badbeard's is (again) paired with Pono Brewing and John Lovegrove and we're "going big" with Badbeard's Barleywine: Hot Cross Buns Edition. a 9.1 ABV aged barleywine with grape must, tinctures of vanilla and cinnamon, a fillip of red currant puree, and a hefty assemblage of Rwanda Kivu Kageyo, Kenya Gura AB and Nicaragua Finca Limoncillo honey process Javanica varietal, the coffee ostensibly cold-brewed IN the keg. Fabuloso coffees!
If you're in town and want to do something different, this is the event for you. 21+ only.

Lots of activity and new coffees despite this being a lull period; many areas of the coffee world are still picking and processing and 2020 crop juiciness is likely still several months away. That said Rwanda is showing beautifully in the Kivu Kageyo washed just in last Friday. Colombia El Obraje is done for the time being and really digging the Colombia Finca San Jose Tabi which just arrived, courtesy of our esteemed importer buds at Traviesa. Tabi is a cultivar which has been around since 2002 when announced by CENICAFE but not too often seen commercially. Finca San Jose is Gilberto Osorio's awesome high- quality Risaralda farm and we've had several different coffees from there over the years.
In the Boutique category there's still the eye-(and nose-)popping Costa Rica Brix Calibrated Chacon Family natural process...that's quite a mouthful, we know, but as complex a coffee as we've ever tried from Costa Rica. Love it, and it's a tiny lot. By the end of the week should also be trotting out an organic Timor-Leste. Good times here!

Yes, planes are involved in the accessing of this delicious PNG coffee....the remote Simbai area is rather inaccessible so farmers must schlep their coffee to an airstrip. Worth every bean!

Black Friday? Not here, sorry, but the elves at Badbeard's put together a limited availability "tasting pair" of 2 special organic Ethiopia Sidama region coffees in both natural and washed process from Shantawene Village. Two 12-oz. bags (1.5 lbs. net) of spectacular stuff for the price of one. Will have until they run out, which will be quickly. The natural process version is complex and fruit-packed, the washed more citrusy and floral...and both very sweet. In case you had any doubts about how the processing of cherry affects the taste...this will be the end of that!

Yirgacheffe Kochere is officially out of stock after a torrid run...but fear not, crushing it with a new Yirg from Dumerso, a stone's throw from Chelelektu (our natural process offering). Also shortly we'll have in a wonderful Papua New Guinea, check back in!

Papua New Guinea stops about to hit us again next week, but we're void for the time being. Added to the Special du Jour Boutique roster is a sultry, certified organic natural process from Uganda Sipi Falls region (Kapkwai) and Brazil Jacarezinho natural process cold-soaked (24 hrs.)...both very limited. In the Special du Jour Deluxe we have a lovely washed Rwanda Rusiga women-produced. Lots of deliciousness to choose from!

Lovely coffee, as always Sidamo region shines bright in the Ethiopia landscape. Produced in low-density "coffee gardens" by smallholder farmers, there are nice fruit and aromatic notes in this fully washed 2019 crop. A keeper!
