NOTE: All of our premium Arabica coffees are roasted to City+ to Full City roasts, showing minimal-to-no surface oils….we want all of the flavor to stay in the beans until the coffee is ground! Despite the additional descriptors, the first flavor and aroma you'll think of is "COFFEE".

Uganda Mt. Elgon Kapchorwa

Our new crop 2018 offering from Uganda is a community coffee from 5 distinct grower groups comprising 885 smallholder farmers in the Kapchorwa District of the Mt. Elgon Region of the Central Eastern part of the country, near the border of western Kenya. Proximity to Kenya is also reflected in the varietals: SL14, SL28 and Bugisu local/native. Uganda has been better-known in the past for its production of Robusta (coffea canephora) but its production of Arabica shrubs has drastically increased thanks to excellent growing conditions, especially in the volcanic areas around Mt. Elgon and committed investment by NGOs and the government. The high-quality potential is evident in this tasty coffee, which has strong cup notes of golden raisin, black cherry, brown sugar and rivals many Kenyan offerings. The five distinct lots represented here, two of which were sun-dried (the remaining three in vertical driers), were harvested between Oct.-Nov. 2017 and just arrived in the ‘States in mid-May.
On a pleasant side note, the reach of this coffee purchase is vast in a very poor country such as Uganda. Our Direct Trade importer partner, Genuine Origin, donates a significant sum from the sale to Uganda-based Kyangalani, which works to eliminate child labor and improve farming practices. Kyagalanyi, was presented with the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Standard-Setter Award in early May! This award recognizes companies who have shown an exceptional commitment to sustainability around the world.

"...this morning I arose early to grind, press, and sample the El Salvadoran Women's Brew. Wow, what an aromatic and delicious treat! I first noticed a lack of offensive acidity (which is why I did not drink coffee for years), a delicacy and round impression on the palate, wonderful fruitiness, and complex flavors. This coffee reminded me of feminine-style red wines, with understated elegance, finesse, and polish. Some coffees are more about the flavor of roasting, almost a charcoal taste, but this was much more subtle and appealing to me. Tomorrow I will try the Ethiopian selection and let you know what I think. You are definitely on to something special with your coffees. "
