Timor-Leste or East Timor, call it what you will, is a tiny country in the Indonesian archipelago with a smaller population (roughly 1.6 million) than the Metro Portland, Oregon area. It gained independence from Indonesia in 1999 and officially became a sovereign state in 2002. Its economy is almost entirely dependent on oil and coffee is its next biggest revenue generator at about $10 million. That we are even able to offer a fine java from Timor-Leste (Starbucks buys almost all of it!) seems like quite a coup, but Badbeard's is determined to be a veritable United Nations of coffee.
This certified organic Ermera Letefoho is a fully-washed, raised-bed dried coffee comprising Timor and Typica hybrids grown around 1650 meters. It is sourced from family-owned farms organized around Café Brisa Serena (CBS), which operates in in Letefoho sub-district of the Ermera municipality. CBS is a social enterprise founded in 2010 with an association of more than 400 small producers. CBS has organized producers to achieve organic certification and to establish best farm management practices. CBS has also provided quality control training with the help of international development aid and increasing premiums from specialty coffee. Producers have also been able to make improvements to processing infrastructure, including the addition of drying structures that have greatly improved their ability to consistently meet quality standards for moisture content and water activity.
I'm happy to offer this as a stand-alone pourover/drip-friendly and espresso (see Rockstar Espresso)component, where it adds zip and richness with high-tones of Lychee, melon, butterscotch, and dried cherry. Unlike anything else this season from the Far East region, and closest in cup character to our two Papua New Guinea coffees. Treat yourself!
