The bounty of Ethiopian washed coffees seems endless sometimes, and picking one or two when ten or twenty candidates emerge from the cupping table is difficult. The Sidamo 2018 offered here hits all my favorite markers of SW Ethiopia coffees: aromatics, body, clean cup, sweet finish. While of no specific provenance, producer Horizon Plantations of Addis Ababa owns vast hectareage (close to 75,000 acreas) in the principal growing regions and we will call it a “community coffee”. It cups closer to traditional Yirgacheffe (very spicy, tea rose/green tea resonance) than Sidamo (fruitier) yet also has nice fruity notes of peach, raspberry and orange blossom. Acidity is moderate and body is medium-to-chewy at the lightish roast profile. Lovely French Press results although I prefer pourover methods.
