This is our first microlot offering from Colombian partners Traviesa Coffee, an importer dedicated to sourcing from small-scale farmers' efforts to produce Arabica coffees of great distinction. While we have been able to find fine, relatively “anonymous” Excelsos and Supremos there are little farms whose dedication must be acknowledged. Colombia is still a marvelous country of origin for so much agriculture!
This coffee comes from an association of small farmers of AGPROSEM which stands for Association of farmers and coffee producers of specialty coffee of Montalvo at Planadas. Montalvo is a region located in Planadas municipality of the Department of Tolima in Colombia. The region is nestled in the central mountain chain of Colombia called Cordillera Central. The town is situated on the eastern face of the mountain chain facing the Magdalena valley, a dry and hot region that is crossed by the main river of Colombia: La Magdalena, and that influences the weather of the region thus determining the quality of the coffee produced there.
The association gathers 39 small coffee growers that got together to improve the quality of the coffee produced in the region, and to get better prices on their coffee through the negotiation power that the associative model gives them. Currently the association is involved in training programs targeting its associates to promote better farming practices, the conservation of the sources of water, and the environment. Andale pues!
Organic Planadas Reserva popped out on the cupping table at a recent tasting here in Portland which included a remarkable Gesha varietal as well. Varietals herein are Castillo, Caturra and Typica, grown between 1500-2100 meters. We are doing a light-medium roast to bring out notes of honey, caramel, citron and tangerine. The body is noteworthy as is the floral ground aroma. Pourover or espresso!
