Coffees from Bali have always intrigued us….so similar to others produced over the vast Indonesian archipelago yet unique in their sweetness. Our organic Blue Moon, hailing from the Kintamani Highlands in Central Bali, does in fact come around about as often as a blue moon, it seems, and we welcome it. Bourbon, Typica and Catimor varietals are grown at between 1200 and 1600 meters, traditional wet-hulled but undergo an unusual two-step drying process on raised beds. This coffee is big-bodied with nice mouthfeel and presents taste notes of dried cherries, cocoa and strawberry…lovely single-origin espresso. Presented in a medium roast to bring out the savory cup factors.
The “romantic” and mystical associations of this island are not entirely misplaced. Coffee is grown in the shadow of majestic Mount Agung amidst citrus trees and highly diversified flora. Production is organized around a Subak Abian, which references the ecologically sustainable irrigation systems developed over 1,000 years ago by a Hindu priest within the tenets of Tri Hita Karana, a philosophy wedding humans, the environment and God.
